FachPack 2024: A Showcase of Sustainable Packaging Innovations by Industry Leaders

FachPack 2024 is poised to be a landmark event in the packaging industry, bringing together leading companies from around the world to showcase their latest innovations and sustainable solutions. Among the notable participants is Freudenberg Performance Materials, which will be presenting a range of cutting-edge packaging solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of various industries. The exhibition, scheduled to take place in Nuremberg, Germany, from September 24-26, promises to be a hub of innovation and sustainability, with Freudenberg at the forefront.

Freudenberg’s offerings at FachPack 2024 will include their renowned Evolon microfilament textiles, which are engineered for the reusable technical packaging of sensitive industrial parts such as molded plastics and painted components. These microfilament fabrics are not only durable but also boast a high recycled fiber content, making them a sustainable choice for packaging. This is particularly crucial for the transportation of sensitive industrial goods, including automotive parts, where reducing damage during transit and lowering rejection rates are paramount.

In addition to their microfilament textiles, Freudenberg will also be showcasing their Evolon ESD materials at the exhibition. These materials are specifically designed for the packaging of sensitive electronic components, offering customizable and permanent electro-static discharge protection along with surface protection. This innovation underscores Freudenberg’s commitment to addressing the unique packaging needs of different industries while prioritizing sustainability and efficiency.

Another highlight of Freudenberg’s showcase will be the Evolon food bag, a product designed for food preservation in the home. This innovative bag can extend the shelf life of vegetables, fruits, and bread by providing excellent moisture and climate management. The Evolon food bag was a finalist in the 2020 Too Good for the Bin competition, part of Germany’s national strategy for food waste reduction, further cementing its credentials as a sustainable packaging solution.

Freudenberg’s commitment to sustainability extends to their nonwoven materials for manufacturing desiccant bags, which will also be demonstrated at FachPack 2024. These nonwovens, available in both conventional synthetic and bio-based wetlaid variants, are binder-free and industrially compostable. This aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions that do not compromise on performance or durability.

Another major player at FachPack 2024 is Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper. Mondi will be showcasing a variety of innovative and flexible packaging solutions, including the ‘world’s first’ mono-material vacuum packaging designed specifically for coffee producer Paulig. This groundbreaking solution exemplifies Mondi’s dedication to sustainability and innovation, setting a new standard in the packaging industry.

Among the other products Mondi will exhibit is the Flexibag reinforced, a PE-based mono-material packaging with recycled content aimed at the pet food industry. Additionally, Mondi’s functional barrier paper range, designed to be recyclable in existing European paper waste streams, will be on display. This range targets various industrial and FMCG markets, highlighting Mondi’s versatility and commitment to creating circular economy solutions.

Mondi’s portfolio also includes the Advantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible grade, known for its high puncture resistance and suitability for heat-sealing applications. This product is recommended for form fill and seal processes for packaging construction parts, dry food, and other products. Another innovative solution from Mondi is the Ecowicketbag, a paper-based packaging made of durable kraft paper, designed to withstand the filling process and protect contents during transport while maintaining recyclability.

Paulus Goess, Growth and Sustainability Director of Flexible Packaging at Mondi, emphasizes the company’s commitment to achieving sustainability targets and investing in circular products. Mondi’s approach to sustainability involves close collaboration with customers to develop fit-for-purpose packaging solutions that protect goods and meet environmental goals. Their presence at FachPack 2024 will highlight their dedication to fostering innovation through research and development and sharing their successes with the industry.

Syntegon Technology, another key participant at FachPack 2024, will present their sustainable packaging processes and solutions for future-proof processing of environmentally friendly materials. With the European Union’s Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation set to take effect in 2030, Syntegon supports manufacturers with innovative technologies and integrated packaging systems to prepare for these changes. Their SVX Agile vertical packaging machine, capable of handling sustainable packaging materials and achieving high output rates, will be a focal point at the trade fair.

Syntegon’s exhibits will also feature environmentally friendly materials, such as a packaging line for bars utilizing the paper-on-form forming shoulder, which allows for the use of paper instead of plastic film without sacrificing performance. The Kliklok Ace carton erector, forming glue-free carton trays, will be another highlight, demonstrating how manufacturers can conserve resources while maintaining packaging efficiency. Syntegon’s comprehensive analyses and material testing services further support their commitment to finding sustainable packaging solutions that meet real-life production conditions.

The cloud-based software solution Synexio, offered by Syntegon, includes a ‘sustainability monitoring’ feature that helps manufacturers optimize their systems’ process parameters and reduce their ecological footprint. Syntegon is continuously developing sustainable solutions, including a new paper-on-form retrofit kit for paper multipacks. Their participation at FachPack 2024 will provide valuable insights into making the transition to sustainable packaging, underscoring their role as a leader in the industry.
